Edmonton Nankasar Gurdwara news update: ਐਡਮਿੰਟਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਨਕਸਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਜ ਇਕ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਚਾਕੂ ਨਾਲ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੋ ਜਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਹਾਲੇ ਇਹ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਗੋਰੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਉੱਤਰ-ਪੂਰਬੀ ਐਡਮਿੰਟਨ ਸਥਿਤ ਨਾਨਕਸਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਜ ਤੜਕੇ ਵਾਪਰੀ ਘਟਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਐਡਮਿੰਟਨ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਘਟਨਾ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਇੱਕ ਬਾਲਗ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪੁਲੀਸ ਜਾਂਚ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੇਰ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਸੇਵਾਦਾਰ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਸੇਵਾਦਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਮਲਾਵਰ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਅ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਐਡਮਿੰਟਨ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਸਰਵਿਸ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਸਵੇਰੇ 5 ਵਜੇ ਤੋਂ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੇਰ ਬਾਅਦ ਮੌਕੇ ’ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਬਾਲਗ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ। ਪੈਰਾ ਮੈਡੀਕਲ ਟੀਮ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਮੌਕੇ ’ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ ਇਲਾਜ ਕੀਤਾ। ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਹਮਲੇ ਦੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਿਤ ਮਕਸਦ ਬਾਰੇ ਹਾਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਡਬਲਿਊ ਐਸ ਓ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਦਾਨਿਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਗਠਨ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਚਿਤਾਵਨੀ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਵਧ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਅੱਜ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਸਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਵਾਪਰਿਆ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਹਾਂ। ਡਬਲਿਊ ਐਸ ਓ ਐਡਮਿੰਟਨ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ ਡੂੰਘਾਈ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗ ਸਕੇ ਕਿ ਹਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਫ਼ਰਤ ਨੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ। ਫ਼ਿਲਹਾਲ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਤ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ‘ਹੇਟ ਕ੍ਰਾਈਮ’ ਨਹੀਂ ਐਲਾਨਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ ਘਟਨਾ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਾਪਰੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਲਬਰਟਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਚਿੰਤਾਵਾਂ ਵਧ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਵੀਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਉੱਤਰ-ਪੂਰਬੀ ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੀਆਂ ਧਮਕੀ ਭਰੀਆਂ ਕਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਸਮੇਸ਼ ਕਲਚਰ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੀਆਂ ਧਮਕੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸਨ। ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੇਅਰ ਜੇਰੋਮੀ ਫਰਕਾਸ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਧਮਕੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।
ਨਾਨਕਸਰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਟੈਂਪਲ 1410 ਹੌਰਸਹਿੱਲਜ਼ ਰੋਡ ’ਤੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ। ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੰਪਲੈਕਸ 1996 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਥਾਂ ’ਤੇ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਲਗਭਗ 30,000 ਵਰਗ ਫੁੱਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੈਲਿਆ ਇਹ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਲਬਰਟਾ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ। ਪੁਲੀਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਘਟਨਾ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਹੋਰ ਵੇਰਵੇ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਹੈ।
Attack at Edmonton Gurdwara
The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) is deeply troubled by a violent incident this morning at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton that left two individuals injured and, according to preliminary reports, involved desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Sikh scripture).
Based on information currently available to WSO, at approximately 5 a.m. an intruder entered the Gurdwara and attacked individuals inside.
Two people were taken to hospital with injuries. There are also reports that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was attacked during the incident.
Police are currently on scene and the Gurdwara has been closed to the public while the investigation continues.
WSO is awaiting further confirmed information about the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
The incident comes at an alarming time for Sikhs in Alberta.
Just yesterday, Calgary police confirmed they were investigating threatening calls made to two Sikh gurdwaras in northeast Calgary, including threats directed at the Dashmesh Culture Centre. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas condemned the threats, which reportedly included calls for the demolition of Sikh places of worship.
Earlier this month, a Sikh truck driver, Talwinder Singh Atwal, reported being subjected to comments about his religious identity before being physically assaulted at an Edmonton Walmart. Atwal said he was punched, pushed and had his beard pulled, while video showed him on the ground with his dastaar partially removed. The Edmonton Police Service Hate Crimes Unit is assisting with that investigation.
In March, the killing of 22-year-old Birinder Singh, in a seemingly unprovoked highway shooting near Leduc Alberta also caused significant alarm within Alberta’s Sikh community and prompted WSO to call for investigators to consider whether hate had been a factor.
These incidents are occurring against the backdrop of a documented rise in anti-Sikh hate across Canada.
