Four senior British lawyers have urged UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to intervene in the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, saying he has been detained in India for several years without a final verdict and has faced serious human rights violations.
According to reports, the lawyers wrote a letter to Starmer asking the British government to raise the matter at the highest diplomatic level and push for Johal’s release or a fair and speedy trial. They argued that the case is not only about one individual, but also concerns the protection of the rights of British citizens abroad.
Jagtar Singh Johal, a Sikh activist from Scotland, was arrested in India in 2017. His family and several human rights organizations have repeatedly alleged that he was subjected to torture and denied justice during his detention.
The lawyers stressed that the UK government should take stronger action to ensure that Johal’s legal and human rights are protected.

ਬਰਤਾਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਵਕੀਲਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ Keir Starmer ਨੂੰ ਅਪੀਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ Jagtar Singh Johal (ਜੱਗੀ ਜੌਹਲ) ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਦਖ਼ਲ ਦੇਣ। ਵਕੀਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੌਹਲ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਅੰਤਿਮ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਲੰਘਣਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਰਿਪੋਰਟਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਵਕੀਲਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਟਾਰਮਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਜੇ ਪੱਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਕੇਸ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚ ਪੱਧਰ ’ਤੇ ਉਠਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੌਹਲ ਦੀ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਜਾਂ ਨਿਆਂਸੰਗਤ ਟਰਾਇਲ ਲਈ ਦਬਾਅ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦਲੀਲ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਨਾਗਰਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਜੱਗੀ ਜੌਹਲ, ਜੋ ਸਕਾਟਲੈਂਡ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਤ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਾਰਕੁਨ ਹਨ, ਨੂੰ 2017 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਆ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਤਸ਼ੱਦਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ
